Fred’s has been serving Northwest Arkansas since 1969 in a renovated church camp on North Walton. I have enjoyed eating at Fred’s since 1998 and have tried nearly every dish on the menu. I had not been to Fred’s in recent years after the passing of their founder and a change of ownership. My first experiences after the changes were disappointing as many of favorite dishes had changed, the coal slaw which was always part of my order had changed and their famous skillet potatoes just weren’t as good as before. But most people visit Fred’s for their pit smoked meats and terrific steaks. As for the steaks you can’t go wrong with the KC strip, or the filet but for a real treat order the smoked sir loin. The smoked sir loin served with au jus and sides is one the best dishes in all of Northwest Arkansas.

For lunch Fred’s offers a number of daily specials and a limited number of items from the dinner menu. My favorites include the sliced beef plate served with beans and slaw (not as good as it used to be but still pretty good) and Fred’s home made barbecue sauce. This sauce is one of the best I have ever tried, vinegar based but still slightly sweet balanced with a great blend of spices. Other favorites include the burgers made from ground sir loin and topped with your favorite toppings. The blue cheese burger at Fred’s is one of the best I have tried. The French dip is loaded with smoked beef and served with au jus for dipping. The rib ends are piled high in a sweet sauce and served with potatoes and slaw. You have to try the ribs at Fred’s which are perfectly seasoned and smoked and offered as an appetizer, dinner, or on the combination plate.

After a great dinner choose from the cheesecake (which is not your traditional heavy cheesecake but a lighter fluffy style cake with berries) or the cobblers. There is a reason Fred’s has been in business for 40 years, great food and great service. Remember Fred’s when you’re deciding your dining destination.

  1. Went to Fred's for lunch today for a business meeting. Decided on the "Smokehouse Salad" at $8.95.

When the server brought it over I swear that i thought she had gotten the order wrong. This salad had so much meat that it was literally piled high to the point that you couldn't have added anymore without it falling off. A lot of places would give you a huge amount of lettuce and a little bit of meat-quite the opposite here.

No way that I was going to finish it despite it being my first meal of the day at noon and pretty hungry when I sat down. I finally finished off later in the afternoon. Tender smoked pulled pork and beef with a very good house dressing recommended by our server.

And the service was excellent. My colleague was draining his ice tea every 5 minutes and she didn't miss a beat. Great food, service, and Sherry (owner) stopped by to say hello as she does with all of the tables. You can find this salad on their lunch menu and Fred's just started delivering their dinner menu so keep that in mind.
