One of the greatest ongoing debates in Northwest Arkansas is “Who makes the pizza?” One of my favorites is Gusano’s. With 6 locations, 5 throughout Northwest Arkansas and one in Joplin, you should try to make your way to one when you get a chance. The atmosphere is a cross between neighborhood pizza parlor and sports bar, complete with multiple flat screens and satellite radio. Periodically you may have a short wait but it’ll be worth it.
I personally am not a big fan of Chicago Style Pizza but if you happen to like this style, try the Carnivore. It’s pretty dang good. I learned that Gusano’s makes there dough fresh twice a day. The cracked black pepper in the crust is what sets them apart from other restaurants. Their balance between crust, cheese, and sauce on their hand tossed style pizza, for this critic, is one of the best.
On this trip I tried one of their new Chicago Style hot dog's which is a nice touch for a Chicago Style pizza restaurant. Other notable items on the menu are their great selections of sandwiches; two of the best are the Italian Sub and the Italian beef. The Italian Beef is served with a nice au jus dip. If you’d like to kick it up a notch, try it with the giardiniera peppers, OH YEAH. A unique item on the appetizer menu is the Pizza Dip. Delivered to your table in a fajita skillet right from the oven, it’s like a hot pepperoni pizza without the crust. Served with “Fritos Scoops” it’s a great starter.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a big fan of Gusano’s. I would give them 4 sporks, but I think in order to get that high of a grade everything has to be pretty darn good. I believe they miss the mark in the salad department. There just not made very well. Everything else is pretty awesome.
